Shell Island
Llanbedr, Wales
Telephone 01341 241453 Fax 01341 241501

There are some 300 acres of land allocated to camping. This makes SHELL ISLAND the biggest camp site in the UK and the Biggest Tenting site in Europe. Unfortunately we only have a tent license and therefore cannot accept Caravans or Campervans. Campervans can be accepted if they have a tent for sleeping purposes. It may sound rediculous but then the Vehicle becomes a means of transport!!

Our services include some 45 water points, 20 fire extinguisher points, 7 miles of roads and tracks accross the'island'. We have a shower and toilet block centrally situated(including Hot+cold basins). If you wish to camp further afield then bring your own Portaloo. Elsan Disposal point available.

Campers may not pitch within 20 yds of another tent in the same field unless prior agreement is reached with adjoining campers. Offenders are liable to be reported, when action will be taken to remedy the situation.

This rule is probably the most popular
rule we have !

Shell Island has three bathing beaches. Two small bathing beaches that are only available when the tide is out and the main Bathing beach at the south end of the 'island' that runs for 6 miles down to Barmouth

Shell Island Supermarket stocks all
your day to day needs - Milk bread newspapers canned goods, frozen food, sweets. Most things you would want
daily. Open 7 days a week 8 am - 8 pm during the main holidays.

Shell Island has most of it's facilities centrally located in the middle of the island behind the leisure complex. The main toilet block has 14 cubicles for the ladies and 10 cubicles and 6 urinals for the gents.

Hot and cold running water in some
19 wash basins.

To the side of the main block is an Elsan disposal point for chemical toilets.

Shaver points are provided in the
gents (240 v.)

The Shower block, located directly behind the main toilets,

The Water is temperature controlled at a single comfortable temperature and operated by a push button to release some 30 seconds of water at a time. The opening times are 8.30 am - 12.00 and 5.30 until 10.00 pm. A single disabled cubicle is available with toilet, shower and wash basin. Entry by RADAR Key. A ladies Hair drying room is provided with 13 amp sockets. Bring your own hair dryers.

There are other toilets available adjoining the Green Cabin near the yacht basin and in a Portakabin close to the Acorn Venture Site. Other toilets are available within the Snack Bar and Tavern Bar. There are some 45 water points spread across the island. Adjoining some of the waterpoints are waste water disposal points All campers are asked to take all their rubbish to a skip sealed in a bin bag. There are 20 fire extinguisher points across the island and all camping sites are within 200 metres of one of these points.

The Laundrette located next to the Supermarket has three dryers and Three washing machines.

The Restaurant is very popular with the Sunday lunch brigade. People come from as far as the Midlands, just to have a day out, and enjoy a Shell Island Traditional Sunday Lunch

Traditional Sunday lunch comprises of a a choice of a starter usually Melon, Soup of the Day or Fruit Juice, followed by a choice

of main course. Always Roast beef and usually roast Welsh Lamb (once a month Roast Pork) accompanied by the usual Yorkshire pudding, horseradish sauce, mint sauce etc. and fresh vegetables. A choice of sweet from the trolley and coffee and mints all for the princely some of £12.50 per adult and £9.00 for children. We are the busiest restaurant for miles for Sunday lunch - we do not compromise quality for price !

The restaurant is only open for Sunday Lunch. Sadly, because of staff shortages we are unable to open the Restaurant in the evenings.

The South bathing beach is backed by fine sand dunes. The north beach is known as the dinghy beach as it is possible to launch small dinghies from it. The small central beach is the quietest and nestles amongst the rocky foreshore unnoticed by most people. In high summer these bathing beaches are probably the most popular private beaches along the coast.

The shell beach runs for most of the length of the 'island'. The rocky forshore helps to retain the shells from being washed further along.

Fishing -North Point: At the North point of Shell Island, the main channel leads out from the Estuary to the sea, and is very popular with fishermen as the water runs deep and at times fast. Bass are the major objective although fishing for plaice and flounder provides good sport. On rare occasions mackerel have entered the estuary and the sea appears to boil with activity.

Bathing Beaches During the day, the bathing beaches are too busy during the summer months. However as twilight approaches and the beach becomes quiet then the fishermen take over. Again bass is the major prize. From the bathing beaches Bass, Flounder Plaice Mackerel, Dog Fish, Skate, Thornback, and an occasional Sting Ray are all fished for

Fishing over the Rocks - Not for the faint hearted. Fishing over the rocks can be rewarding as in 1995 it proved to be for Graham Wilson. He landed the biggest shore caught bass in the UK . Fishing over the rocks means floating your line and hoping not to get snagged. More often than not, you end up loosing your tackle.

Fishing by boat Fishing from your own boat can be very fruitful. At the south end of Shell Island is a reef St. Patricks Causeway which runs out for 14 miles. Great days can be spent fishing for a few mackerel to provide an afternoon of sport fishing for Tope, Bullhuss, Doggies, Skate, Thornbacks. An afternoon fishing on the reef for black bream can provide a feast for the old evening Bar-b-cue. and indeed what a feast!

Bait Peeler crabs are available to gather yourself from the rockpools. Lug worm can be dug from the estuary alongside the boats. Various shellfish, Cockles mussels and small clams can be gathered in the estuary. If really caught out, frozen bait can be purchased on the 'island'

Boating today at Shell Island relies on Leisure boats. Boat owners started to bring their boats to Shell Island in the 1960's and the first mooring were put down in 1966. Today up to a hundred boats moor here and there is a waiting list to come in . At the South end of Shell Island about half a mile from the entrance there is St Patricks causeway which provides an ideal fishing
reef for anglers. The Bay is ideally suited to the yachtsman as Abersoch, Pwllheli, Portmadoc, Barmouth and Aberdovey are all within a few hours sail
