The Memorial Tank to "The Forgotten Dead"
Dedicated to the 946 American Service men who died here in 1944
You will find "The Sea Shanty" opposite the memorial, it is a stone-built restaurant just a few steps from the beach is open from early in the morning right through to the evening in season, and the day starts with a choice of breakfasts. Other offerings range from ice creams to daytime snacks, and a children's menu. The Sea Shanty also provides an extensive takeaway service. It is here you may also purchase "The Forgotten Dead" "please excuse the the plumb
but it is an amazing story untold for many years".
We visited South Hams out of season so to speak, and were rewarded with
quiet roads, beautiful weather, and a delightful stay at Greyhomes with one of
the finest panoramic views in the Southwest. Special thanks to the owners
for accommodating us and giving us much help on the area.

Salcombe and the Estuary, Start Point and Start Bay
The Southernmost town in the South Hams: an area of unspoilt natural beauty
Salcombe is surrounded by tranquil countryside with a magnificent scenic coastline, here you can travel the estuary by ferry, or just laze about and watch the world go by. The beaches have a Seaside Award for water quality and cleanliness. They are sandy and safe.
Start Point is one of the most exposed peninsulas on the English Coast
running sharply almost a mile into the sea on the South side of
Start Bay near Dartmouth. The Salcombe vide shows scenes from
both Start Bay and Start Point
Driving in the South Hams is easy, the main roads are good but busy
by far the best way to get around is using the minor roads, (Sat Nav recommended) they are narrow, a wonder to traverse and with passing places
but as you will see from our video of the region you have to be on your toes
On no account should you take a touring caravan on these roads
The drive is shown within our Salcombe video
