Nearby: 'Long, narrow, stern and desolate' is the description Wordsworth used for Wast Water. Coleridge, on the other hand, thought it 'a marvelous sight'. The rugged and isolated Wasdale valley and its lake were formed by glaciation. At three miles in length and a half mile in width, Wast Water is England's deepest lake, reaching downward 258 feet, 3 miles in length and ½ mile wide. The lake is linked to the river Esk.
Of dramatic impact is the desolate Wast Water Screes, a crumbling 1500-foot high vertical wall of rock dropping straight into the lake's south-eastern shore. Red tinted bands of iron laden rock add colour to the unstable black rock. The red colouring was once used for marking sheep. A low level path runs along the lakeshore. Ilgill Head provides a high level ridge walk with views over the lake |
|
Ringing the lake is a panorama
of majestic mountains that includes
Sca Fell, England's highest mountain.
Cut off from the rest of Lakeland by
its mountains, Wast Water and its
valley are little changed by human habitation or tourism.

Egremont is a traditional Market Town with a long historical and industrial heritage. The Town is nestled at the foot of Uldale Valley and Dent Fell. The Towns layout today is much the same as it was envisaged by Richard de Lucy in c.1200 with its wide Main Street opening out into the Market Place.

Home to an annual fair originating in 1267, and as a Town we has over 1000 years of history. The remains of the Norman Castle are situated at the southern end of Main Street near the Market Place and was built in the 12th century. Egremont was granted its Market Charter by King Henry III.
While in Egremont you can see and do many different things, you can visit all of our natural and heritage sites as well as being able to enjoy and take part in our festivals such as the Torch Light Parade and of course our famous Crab Fair and Sports. An active or relaxed time can be found in Egremont with lots to do for all the family. There are Underground Mine Trips, Mining Heritage Museum, Genealogy Centre, Art Gallery, Historic Castle, Nature Reserves, Rivers, Lakes, Open Country Side, Woods and Forrest, Cycle Paths and walks to experience and enjoy.

Riverside Tourer Park

The Dominating River Caldew and its tributary beck (Gillcambon), are completely open and accessible to the site, and form over half of the perimeter. Although the CL is only a 5 van site, we have 10 well spaced pitches in total, all with electric hook-ups, providing our clients the choice of hard standing (5) or well drained grass (5) which allows plenty of rotation, with very little pitch-wear. Mains water, waste and chemical disposal, W.C. and FREE shower are all laid on, to a high standard. Discreet dusk to dawn lighting is provided over the site, and we have a dedicated (flood lit) river edge dog walk. |
Due to ever increasing popularity of the CL, we obtained planning permission in
2003 to provide extra pitches. Unwilling
to alter the CL in any way which may endanger its character, we have
developed our adjoining land in almost
mirror image of the existing,
with 6 pitches |
|
Again, we have opened up the stretch of river bordering this land to provide complete access to site users. The Mill Dam, (feeding the Saw Mill), use to be
in this stretch of the river, and the Millrace flowed through the lower edge of this land, hence our naming. |

Riverside is situated on the outskirts of
the Hamlet of Millhouse, 1.5 miles from Hesket-New-Market, 3 miles from
Caldbeck, Mid point as the crow flies
between Keswick and Carlisle,
and central to Penrith, Cockermouth
and Wigton all within 30 minutes journey |
The nearest Lakeland Fells, (Carrock, High Pike, Skiddaw and Saddle Back) are only 5 minutes up the road, which are popular with walkers who prefer the quietness and discovering un-trodden territory, with no problems parking your car, unlike the mid and south fells of the Lake District which are becoming crowded. There are also foot paths leading from the adjacent site entrance, and from the Hamlet. |
If you enjoy the peace and quietness of the country side, surrounded with features
of interest, we feel confident that our well equipped tourer site can offer just what
you require. Unlike the South &
Mid Lakes, our area remains un-spoilt,
and has yet to be "Discovered" by most. |
